From Where I'm Standing

Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii was a color photographer before his time, who undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire for Tsar Nicholas II. He was able to capture color by taking three pictures of each scene, each with a different red, green or blue color filter. Walter Frankhauser, a photographer contracted by the Library of Congress, manually registered and cleaned up some 120 of the original high-resolution scans, with breathtakingly beautiful results. The results of his effort can be seen at the online-exhibit The Empire That Was Russia.

Green eggs that are fire red

Cracked open atop thick-sliced grainy bread

Girl with big feet who walks with a tilt

Brings us warm coffee with full cream milk.

Autumn sun and autumn trees

Shaggy shiny doggies in the autumn breeze

Boy with infinite pasts who sits by my side

Pays for breakfast so I offer him a ride.

One drink and leave. Don’t be rude,

but drink your drink quickly, say

goodbye, walk out the door, get in

your car, and go down the road.

meaningful.

I recently re-watched Pulp Fiction, having only seen it once when I was 13 (what were my parents thinking?!). I think I blocked out most of the experience, as all I could really recall was vague bright colours and splashes of violence. It all came flooding back the other night though, especially the scene with the needle to Uma Thurman’s overdosing heart. Shudder. This has to be my favourite scene though. The music choice is perfect. As it is in most of this film.

Since 1989

Tom Ballard used to live in the share-house that I recently moved in to. He seems to be a very lovely man, based on the fact that he extended a free ticket to his comedy show to me based on this small coincidence. I haven’t listened to breakfast radio in a while, so I wasn’t really familiar with his style, nor did I really know anything about him at all besides the fact that he is on Triple J. After one hour at the Swiss Club with him, I feel like this has changed. I now know:

  • He had a bed wetting phase when he was nine.
  • He once masturbated in maths class.
  • He recently contracted scabies
  • Josh Thomas broke his heart
  • He’s not bitter about this at all.

It was, in all seriousness, the funniest comedy show I have seen. His timing is perfect, his jokes just filthy enough, his cynicism erring just on the good side, and his confidence and talent obvious.

My favourite things about Queen Vic Markets last Sunday:

  • My friend Sharon pretending that she owns a motorbike
  • Tasting creamy yummy soft cheddar cheese
  • The wine/spirits/magic-potion-to-make-your-hair-long-and-shiny-and-taste-like-chocolate stall that looks like what I imagine an ‘apothecary’ to be. And who doesn’t want to try ‘Capachono Liqueur’?
  • The plum man: “All Plums four dollars Big Plums Little Plums Middle Plums Red Plums Purple Plums all the same Yum Plums”
